I just watched “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in 3D. The beginning was promising, but overall it was a disappointment. I checked out the adventure novel it was based on, On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. Needless to say, I found it to be much more interesting. I would even recommend it.
The people who produced “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” would have done better to make the novel On Stranger Tides into a movie instead of taking pieces of Tim Power’s fantasy. action-adventure and gluing it into the monster with Captain Jack Sparrow cavorting through every scene like an empty-headed buffoon. This character was good in the first two movies, but Hollywood has turned him into an irritating scarecrow who needs to hurry to the wizard for a new brain.
I want to add that I usually adore Johnny Depp. If it weren’t for the outrageous pay check he received, I would like to think that he would have passed on this project.
I did like the plot line with Philip, the holy man, played by Sam Claflin and Syrena, the mermaid, Astrid Berges-Frisbey. That is a movie that I want to see. Oh, and the ships in the bottle plot was also great. My favorite scene, with Jack Sparrow, was him and Gibbs, Kevin McNally, walking along the island shore toting the bag filled with all the ships in the bottles. I could just see a, hopefully, fantastic sequel looming on the horizon.
